What a time to be alive! Extinct illnesses are BACK.
What a time to be alive, indeed. In fact, it’s quite depressing that here we are, discussing the selfishness of people who refuse to vaccinate their kids in response to a mythical fear. It’s equally depressing for all of us to feel the need to celebrate the teenage who defied his parents and got vaccinated in response to the recent outbreak in the Pacific Northwest.

Perhaps the most profound responses to these ongoing outbreaks are the people sharing their own stories from the pre-vaccination days, and that’s really what I want to show here. Below are a number of tweet from folks who contracted Measles, and then suffered severe complications. Let the patients tell the story:

When I was a baby after WWII, I had mumps which went into encephalitis .. antibiotics were new but miraculous. I survived but with permanent nerve deafness in my right ear. I remember when the Salk vaccine came out a few years later and we lined up at school to get our shots.
